Years spent in college
Following his time spent serving in the Navy, Armstrong found his way back to Purdue. His grades, which were previously decent but not spectacular, have now improved, bringing his final grade point average up to 4.8 out of 6.0, which is respectable but not extraordinary enough to be considered remarkable. He became a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity and resided in the home that the fraternity offered. As a part of the all-student revue, he was responsible for writing and co-directing two musicals. The first was a rendition of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which he co-directed with his girlfriend Joanne Alford, who is a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority. The production featured songs from the Walt Disney film, such as 'Someday My Prince Will Come.' The second was titled 'The Land of Egelloc,' and it featured music from Gilbert and Sullivan, but it featured new lyrics. As the head of the Purdue Aero Flying Club, he was also the pilot of the club's aircraft, which included an Aeronca and a handful of Pipers. These aircraft were stored at Aretz Airport in Lafayette, Indiana, which is only a short distance away. In 1954, while he was flying the Aeronca to Wapakoneta, he made a hard landing in a farmer's field, which caused it to sustain damage. While attending a party that was held by Alpha Chi Omega, Armstrong had the opportunity to meet Janet Elizabeth Shearon, who was studying in home economics. Testing pilot
Following his graduation from Purdue, Armstrong went on to pursue a career as a test pilot during experimental research. He flew the North American X-15 seven times, including the first flight with the Q-ball system, the first flight of the number 3 X-15 airframe, and the first flight of the MH-96 adaptive flight control system. After the National Aeronautics and Space Administration was absorbed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration on October 1, 1958, he started working for the new agency.
The stories of Armstrong's involvement in a number of situations that became part of Edwards folklore or were documented in the memoirs of his coworkers are documented below. Armstrong was conducting a test of the MH-96 control system on his sixth flight of the X-15, which took place on April 20, 1962. During this flight, he reached a height of more than 207,000 feet. On September 13, 1962, Deke Slayton, the Director of Flight Crew Operations for NASA, contacted Armstrong and asked him whether he would be interested in joining the NASA Astronaut Corps as part of what the press referred to as 'the New Nine.' Armstrong responded without any hesitation, saying that he would be interested in joining the NASA Astronaut Corps. Despite the fact that press stories had been circulating since the beginning of that year that he would be picked as the 'first civilian astronaut,' the selections were not made public until three days later. Elliot See, another former navy aviator, was the other civilian pilot that was chosen for this squad. Armstrong was one of the two civilian pilots that were chosen. The Gemini 8 sign
Gemini 8's crew assignments were revealed on September 20, 1965, when the announcement was made. Unlike several members of earlier crews, none of the astronauts on the Apollo 11 mission experienced the symptoms of space sickness. In particular, Armstrong was relieved about this, since he had been prone to experiencing motion sickness as a youngster and had the potential to feel unwell when engaging in aerobatics for extended periods of time.
The mission of Apollo 11 was not to touch down at a specific place on the Moon; rather, it was to guarantee a safe landing on the Moon. At three minutes into the lunar descent, Armstrong made the observation that craters were passing approximately two seconds earlier than they were supposed to. This suggested that the Lunar Module Eagle would most likely touch down many miles outside the landing zone that had been intended. When the Eagle's landing radar finally made contact with the surface, a number of computer fault warnings began to ring. First, there was an alarm with the number 1202, and despite the fact that both Armstrong and Aldrin had received intensive training, none of them understood what this code indicated. CAPCOM Charles Duke in Houston swiftly informed them that the alarms were not a reason for concern; the 1202 and 1201 alerts were produced by executive overflows in the lunar module navigation computer. They got this information in a timely manner. In 2007, Aldrin stated that the overflows were the result of his personal counter-checklist decision to leave the docking radar on during the landing procedure. This decision allowed the computer to analyze radar data that was not essential. When the computer did not have sufficient time to complete all of the jobs, it abandoned the tasks with a lesser priority, which resulted in the alarms being triggered. During the process of re-docking with the Apollo command module, Aldrin stated that he made the decision to keep the radar installed in the event that an abort was required; however, he was unaware that this would result in the processing overrun.
As soon as Armstrong became aware that they were traveling in the direction of a landing region that appeared to be hazardous, he seized manual control of the LM and made an effort to choose a more secure location. This took far more time than anticipated, far longer than the majority of simulations had taken. It was for this reason that Mission Control was concerned that the LM was getting short on fuel. When they touched down, Aldrin and Armstrong were under the impression that they had forty seconds of fuel remaining. This included the twenty seconds of fuel that had to be preserved in case the mission had to be aborted. During his training, Armstrong had successfully landed the LM on several times with less than 15 seconds of fuel remaining. He was also sure that the LM could withstand a fall of up to 50 feet. A post-mission examination revealed that there were around forty-five to fifty seconds of propellant burn time remaining at the moment of touchdown.
On July 20, 1969, a few seconds after 20:17:40 UTC, the first human astronauts successfully touched down on the surface of the Moon. As soon as one of the three 67-inch probes that were attached to three of the LM's four legs made contact with the surface, a panel light in the LM illuminated, and Aldrin called out, 'Contact light.' Armstrong then shut down the engine and said, 'Shutdown.' As the LM had settled onto the surface, Aldrin said, 'Okay, engine stop,' and then they both called out some post-landing checklist items. Following a ten-second wait, Duke acknowledged the landing by saying, 'We copy you down, Eagle.' Armstrong then reported the touchdown to Mission Control and the rest of the world by saying, 'Houston, Tranquility Base here.' Aldrin and Armstrong acknowledged the successful landing of the Eagle by shaking hands vigorously and giving each other a slap on the back. Following this, they went back to the checklist of contingency tasks, which they had prepared in case an emergency liftoff was required. Following Armstrong's confirmation that the aircraft had touched down, Duke reaffirmed his acknowledgment and added a note on the flight's relief, saying, 'Roger, Tranquility.' From the ground, we are copying you. You have a group of guys who are on the verge of turning blue. We have resumed our breathing. During the landing, Armstrong's pulse rate fluctuated between 100 and 150 beats per minute. Thank you so much.
The first step on the moon
However, Armstrong requested that this be rescheduled to earlier in the evening, Houston time, so that the crew may have a rest break before leaving the module. The flight plan planned for this to take place. As soon as he and Aldrin were prepared to leave the ship, the Eagle was depressurized, the hatch was opened, and Armstrong began to descend the ladder. The moment Armstrong reached the foot of the ladder, he said, 'I'm going to step off the LM no'w.' After turning and placing his left boot on the surface of the moon at 02:56 UTC on July 21, 1969, he then exclaimed, 'That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.' The precise moment when Armstrong took his first step on the moon is unknown.
On his own, Armstrong crafted the renowned epigram that he is known for. 'I always knew there was a good chance of being able to return to Earth, but I thought the chances of a successful touch down on the moon surface were about even money—fifty–fifty,' he explained to George Plimpton in an interview that was published in Esquire magazine in 1983. He said that he chose the words 'just prior to leaving the LM' during a press conference that took place after the flight. The vast majority of individuals are unaware of how challenging the task might be. Therefore, it did not appear to me that there was much sense in thinking of something to say if we would have to abort landing.' In 2012, his brother Dean Armstrong stated that Neil gave him a draft of the sentence many months before to the launch. There is no evidence for the indefinite article 'a' before man' in the recordings of Armstrong's communication, despite the fact that NASA and Armstrong argued for years that static covered it. Armstrong first claimed that he would never make a mistake of this nature; but, after listening to recordings many times, he ultimately admitted that he must have dropped the letter 'a' when recording. He subsequently stated that he 'would hope that history would grant me leeway for dropping the syllable and understand that it was certainly intended, even if it was not said—although it might actually have been.' He was referring to the fact that he would like to be accepted by history. There have since been claims and counter-claims about whether acoustic analysis of the recording reveals the presence of the missing 'a'; Peter Shann Ford, an Australian computer programmer, conducted a digital audio analysis and claims that Armstrong did say 'a man', but the 'a' was inaudible due to the limitations of communications technology of the time. In order to submit these results to Armstrong and NASA personnel, Ford and James R. Hansen, Armstrong's authorized biographer, delivered them to Armstrong. NASA representatives then did their own investigation. Armstrong referred to Ford's approach as 'persuasive.' Linguists David Beaver and Mark Liberman expressed their concern regarding Ford's findings on the blog Language Log. Once more, a research that was peer-reviewed in 2016 came to the conclusion that Armstrong had included the article. The letter 'a' is still included in parenthesis in the transcript provided by NASA.
During the time when Armstrong made his announcement, Voice of America was being carried live by the BBC as well as a great number of other stations all over the world. Following their subsequent re-entry into the LM, the hatch will be shut and sealed. After being freed from an 18-day quarantine to ensure that they had not picked up any viruses or diseases from the Moon, the crew was celebrated all throughout the United States and around the world as part of a 38-day tour to commemorate the 'Giant Leap' mission.
The three astronauts gave speeches and participated in ticker-tape parades in New York and Chicago on August 13, marking the beginning of the trip. There were about six million people in attendance at these events. On the same evening, an official state banquet was conducted in Los Angeles to mark the flight. The meal was attended by members of Congress, 44 governors, the Chief Justice of the United States, and ambassadors from 83 other countries. President Nixon and Vice President Agnew each handed a Presidential Medal of Freedom to each of the astronauts working on the space shuttle.
Following the tour, Armstrong participated in Bob Hope's 1969 United States of America show, particularly to Vietnam. Armstrong came to the Soviet Union in May of 1970 in order to deliver a presentation at the thirteenth annual meeting of the International Committee on Space Research. After landing in Leningrad from Poland, he traveled to Moscow, where he met with Premier Alexei Kosygin. The Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center was presented to Armstrong, who was the first westerner to witness the supersonic Tupolev Tu-144. Armstrong also had the opportunity to visit the facility, which he characterized as having a 'bit Victorian in nature.' Despite the fact that Valentina Tereshkova had been his host and Andriyan Nikolayev, her husband, was on board, Armstrong was taken aback when he watched a delayed film of the launch of Soyuz 9 at the end of the day.
